- Functional, aesthetic and manufacturability benefits of SABIC’s specialty materials are in the spotlight at Booth 633 in Hall A2.
- The company’s exhibit features materials for improving design, performance and economies of scale for EV chargers, battery packs, fuel cells and photovoltaic applications.
- Winners of Edison Awards and R&D 100 Awards are highlighted in applications and demonstrators.
SABIC, a global leader in the chemicals industry, is showcasing at The smarter E Europe 2024 a broad range of cutting-edge material solutions that can help accelerate the transformation of the energy sector. With innovative demonstrators and design concepts, SABIC’s exhibit (Booth 633, Hall A2) focuses on energy sourcing, supply and storage applications. Visitors can learn how specialty thermoplastics enable production scale-up and contribute to a sustainable energy future.
“Availability of specialty materials can be instrumental in accelerating energy transformation and helping our customers advance on their road to net-zero emissions,” said Maureen MacDonald-Stein, director, Portfolio Strategy & Marketing for SABIC Polymers, Specialties BU. “We offer customers in the energy industry a comprehensive portfolio of high-performance polymers that provide a unique combination of physical properties for flexibility of design, and manufacturing of applications in large volumes with cost-effectiveness and resource efficiency”.
Highest CTI Rating for Solar Connectors
Solar connectors molded from new LNP™ ELCRES™ EXL copolymer showcase the material’s high comparative tracking index (CTI) of 600V, a requirement for emerging 1.5Kv components. This 2023 R&D 100 Awards winner delivers low-temperature ductility, weatherability, flame retardancy and outstanding electrical properties. Also on display are junction boxes made from NORYL™ resins, which offer dimensional stability, flame retardancy and retention of dielectric properties.
Other solutions for the solar industry include LNP VERTON™ compound, a long-glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene material well suited for solar panel frames, and internally lubricated LNP LUBRICOMP™ compound used in bearings in solar tracking systems. LNP VERTON compound is made without intentionally added polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
Sleek EV Charger
SABIC’s floor-mounted sleek Charge Go! concept shows how specialty materials can potentially optimize EV charger aesthetics, ergonomics and operation. Edison Award-winning (molded-in colorable) LNP™ SLX copolymer resin and (paintable) NORYL GTX™ resin are used for the front and back panels, the LED screen cover and the base unit with molded-in air vents. The charging connector is molded from LNP EXL resin, which offers weatherability, impact and flame retardancy.
Fuel Cell Demonstrator
A fuel cell demonstrator features bipolar plates molded from conductive LNP STAT-KON™ compound to prevent corrosion and minimize secondary operations. This Edison Award-winning material is also well suited for electrodes in storage batteries, replacing heavier metal electrodes.
Safety Solutions
Applications requiring protection against thermal or electrical failure can benefit from LNP KONDUIT™ compounds for thermal management and LNP FARADEX™ compounds for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding.
Battery Pack Lightweighting
Extruded and foamed NORYL resins can deliver exceptional weight reduction vs. metals and thermosets in EV battery pack applications. NORYL resins also tolerate battery expansion and contraction during charging and when operating under different temperatures, helping to extend battery service life.
